# Navigating Trademarks: Insights from the MENACE x Umbro x WSS Collaboration

The Paperwork / Apparel / Collabs

While everyone's talking about the MENACE x Umbro x WSS collection, I went and pulled the actual paperwork. Steven Mena built MENACE in Southeast LA and grew it into a label that has worked with adidas, DC and the LA Galaxy. The collab is the headline. The USPTO record is the better story: a core mark renewed, a pending fight with the Yankees, and a registration that lapsed and came back under a different owner.

| 98 WSS stores in California, Texas, Arizona and Nevada carrying the collection from Oct. 7, after an online release Oct. 4. |
| --- |

The collection is 23 pieces priced from $45 to $120, [per the October 2 announcement](https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/umbro-steven-mena-and-wss-connect-futbol-cultures-in-exclusive-collection-302897457.html). Mena, raised in Southeast LA by Nicaraguan and Salvadoran parents, described designing it by picturing himself as a kid walking into WSS, thinking about "what I would've been excited to find there." WSS called his work bringing "the voice and style of Los Angeles to a wider audience."

Here's my read of the filings: MENACE is in the middle of the hardest stage for a culture-built brand, when a founder's personal project becomes a company with partners, retail doors and lawyers on the other side. Most of the record shows a brand handling that well. One entry shows the quiet risk of that stage, and it isn't the Yankees opposition everyone would notice first. It's a registration that split between the founder and his company.

| 23 Pieces in the collection | 2015 Year MENACE registered | 6 Mena filings reviewed | May 1 Date a registration was cancelled for a missed filing |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |

## The docket, filing by filing

| Mark | Owner on record | What the record shows |
| --- | --- | --- |
| [MENACE](https://tsdr.uspto.gov/statusview/sn86506885) | Menace Los Angeles, LLC | Registered Aug. 18, 2015 for clothing; renewed Dec. 2, 2025. Originally registered to Steven Mena. |
| [M logo](https://tsdr.uspto.gov/statusview/sn98596395) | Menace Los Angeles, LLC | Published Dec. 2025; opposed by the New York Yankees Partnership ([Opp. No. 91307760](https://ttabvue.uspto.gov/ttabvue/v?pno=91307760&pty=OPP)); proceeding suspended Sept. 29, 2026. |
| [BEVERLY HILLS GUN RANGE](https://tsdr.uspto.gov/statusview/sn88351384) | Menace Los Angeles, LLC | Registered Oct. 15, 2019; cancelled May 1, 2026 under Section 8. |
| [BEVERLY HILLS GUN RANGE](https://tsdr.uspto.gov/statusview/sn99852285) | Steven Mena, individually | Refiled May 28, 2026; approved for publication Sept. 30, 2026. |
| [GARMENT DIVISION](https://tsdr.uspto.gov/statusview/sn98596404) | Menace Los Angeles, LLC | Abandoned May 2026 for no statement of use; revived June 2026; statement of use accepted Oct. 1, 2026. |
| [BURNT COMPANY](https://tsdr.uspto.gov/statusview/sn98769900) | Menace Los Angeles, LLC | Final refusal May 2025; abandoned Aug. 2025 for no response. |

Every one of these marks is filed in Class 25, for clothing and, in some filings, footwear. That's the right core for an apparel label, and it's also the limit. A trademark covers a name for the goods listed. It doesn't cover a neighborhood, a style or a story, and it doesn't reach categories the brand never filed for.

## What happened to BEVERLY HILLS GUN RANGE?

| **The registration was cancelled because the required maintenance filing wasn't made, then the brand was refiled under Steven Mena's own name.** Every federal registration needs a Section 8 declaration of continued use between the fifth and sixth year after registration, with a six-month grace period. Miss that window and the registration is cancelled, no matter how well the product is selling. |
| --- |

The record shows the USPTO sent a courtesy reminder in October 2024 and the registration was [cancelled under Section 8](https://tsdr.uspto.gov/statusview/sn88351384) on May 1, 2026. The [USPTO's maintenance guide](https://www.uspto.gov/trademarks/maintain/keeping-your-registration-alive) lays out the deadlines. Losing a registration doesn't erase common-law rights that come from actual use, but it does give up the presumptions and notice that come with being on the federal register, and the new filing starts over with a new date.

Then the more interesting move: the new application was filed by Steven Mena as an individual, not by the LLC that owned the earlier registration and still owns MENACE. I don't know why, and there can be good reasons, from tax planning to keeping a side project separate. But it means one brand line now sits with the founder and the rest sit with the company. That's the kind of split a collaborator's lawyer, an investor or a future buyer will ask about.

The collab gets the press. The maintenance calendar decides what you still own when it's over.

## What does the Yankees opposition mean?

| **An opposition is a proceeding at the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB) where a party asks the USPTO not to register a published mark.** It isn't a lawsuit over sales, and it doesn't decide whether anyone infringed. Here the New York Yankees Partnership opposed MENACE's M logo, pleading its own registrations, and the board suspended the proceeding on September 29, 2026. |
| --- |

The [TTABVUE docket](https://ttabvue.uspto.gov/ttabvue/v?pno=91307760&pty=OPP) shows the posture, not the outcome. Suspensions often happen while parties talk, but the docket doesn't tell us whether a settlement is coming, and I won't guess. What I'll say is that a single-letter logo in apparel will almost always draw attention from owners of famous single-letter and monogram marks. That's a clearance question, not a moral one, and it's worth asking before the logo goes on a collab product.

## Here's what I'd check before a brand like MENACE signs its next collab

| 1 | Who owns each mark. Line up every mark used on the collab against the owner on record. If some sit with the founder and some with the company, decide whether that's intentional and document the license between them. |
| --- | --- |
| 2 | What's actually on the product. The release doesn't say whether MENACE branding appears on the pieces. If it does, the collab agreement should say who approves its use and what happens to it after the term. |
| 3 | The maintenance calendar. Section 8 and renewal dates for every registration, owned by someone whose job it is. One missed date already cost a registration. |
| 4 | Pending disputes. Know which marks are in a TTAB proceeding and keep them off co-branded products until the posture is clear. |
| 5 | Leftover inventory and post-term use. Collab agreements should say who can sell remaining stock, for how long, and whether either side can reuse designs. |

## The honest complication

You could argue none of this matters much. MENACE's core mark is registered and renewed, the collab is with established partners, and streetwear lives on hype and community more than on paperwork. Plenty of labels run for years on a single registration and great relationships. Some abandoned applications are deliberate, too; brands test names and let the losers go.

That's fair, and it's why I read this record as mostly healthy. The core asset was renewed on time, and the GARMENT DIVISION revival shows someone is watching. But the brands that last past the collab cycle are the ones whose ownership is as clear as their design language. When a big partner sends the next agreement, it will ask for a list of what the label owns and who owns it. That list should be boring.

| Mena designed for the kid walking into WSS. The paperwork is for the brand that kid gets to inherit. |
| --- |

The collection hits stores this week, and it should. A label from Southeast LA is sitting on shelves across four states next to a heritage soccer brand. That's culture turning into commercial value in real time. The founders who keep that value are the ones who treat the filing docket like the product line: reviewed every season, nothing left to chance.
