# Spotify Podcast Monetization Is Coming to the Dominican Republic

Latin America already created the audience. Spotify is opening another path to revenue. The creators who benefit most will be the ones who know what they own before the money arrives.

| OCT. 20 Spotify Partner Program availability begins in the Dominican Republic and more than 30 other new markets |
| --- |

I had just left Podcast Movement in New York when Spotify made the announcement. For two days, the industry had been talking about video, advertising, audience growth, and the next wave of podcast markets. One presentation placed 163 million adult podcast listeners across five measured Latin American markets and projected the regional audience could reach 178 million by 2027.

Then the news became local. Spotify announced that its Partner Program would expand to the Dominican Republic, Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Uruguay, El Salvador, Honduras, Panama, Bolivia, Nicaragua, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, and other new markets.

For a creator working from Santo Domingo, Santiago, San Juan, Bogotá, Mexico City, or Miami, this is not a small platform update. It is an acknowledgment that Latin American audiences are not an emerging footnote to the podcast industry. They are already one of its largest sources of attention.

Latin America did not suddenly become valuable because a platform activated a revenue feature. The value was already there. The platform finally built another meter for it.

## What Spotify Actually Changed

Beginning October 20, 2026, eligible creators with a legal address in the Dominican Republic and other newly added markets can apply to the Spotify Partner Program. Spotify describes two principal revenue streams: advertising revenue and Premium video revenue.

For ads monetized through the program, Spotify states that participating creators receive 50% of the revenue Spotify recognizes when the ad plays. For qualifying video episodes watched by Premium members, Spotify can remove dynamic ads and calculate payment using a proprietary formula based on factors such as consumption time, market, and audience activity.

| Spotify Partner Program eligibility | |
| --- | --- |
| Hosting | The show must be hosted on Spotify for Creators. |
| Catalog | At least three published episodes. |
| Consumption | At least 2,000 Spotify consumption hours during the previous 30 days. |
| Audience | At least 1,000 audience members on Spotify during the previous 30 days. |

There is an important limitation for creators based in the Dominican Republic and several other newly included markets. Spotify says its ads are not currently served to listeners in those markets through Spotify for Creators. A Dominican creator may still earn Premium video revenue and revenue from Spotify-delivered ads when the content is consumed elsewhere, but local availability does not mean every local listen immediately becomes an ad impression.

That distinction matters. A headline can say monetization has arrived. A business plan has to ask exactly which content qualifies, where the audience is located, what revenue formula applies, and which conditions Spotify can change.

## The Market Was Already Here

The presentation I saw at Podcast Movement mapped the scale of adult podcast listening across five measured Latin American markets. Brazil accounted for roughly 80 million listeners, Mexico 51 million, Argentina 12 million, Colombia 10 million, and Chile 7 million. The percentages varied by country, but the conclusion did not: podcasting in Latin America is already mass media.

The commercial infrastructure has not always kept pace with the cultural influence. Latin American creators produce language, humor, commentary, music discovery, political analysis, sports culture, and diaspora stories that travel well beyond national borders. The audience can be global while the creator remains local, undercapitalized, and dependent on platforms headquartered somewhere else.

That is the opportunity and the warning. Better monetization can help creators hire editors, improve production, fund research, and treat a show like a serious enterprise. It can also create a new dependency if the entire business rests on one platform's eligibility rules and proprietary payment formula.

Distribution can make you visible. Monetization can make you income. Ownership is what can make you an asset.

## Monetization Is Not Ownership

A creator can qualify for payments without owning the most valuable parts of the show. The name may never have been cleared or registered. A producer may own portions of the recordings. A co-host may believe the brand belongs equally to both people, even when no agreement says so. Guest releases may be inconsistent. Music may be used without a license that covers every platform and format.

None of those gaps prevent a show from becoming popular. That is why they are dangerous. The audience arrives first. The ownership dispute usually arrives after there is something worth fighting over.

A podcast should be understood as a stack of assets, not a folder of audio files. The stack includes the show name, artwork, episode recordings, scripts, video, recurring segments, social accounts, website, mailing list, sponsorship agreements, merchandise, live-event rights, and the contracts connecting everyone who helps make the show.

| Before the show earns more, identify what it owns | |
| --- | --- |
| The name | Search it, decide who owns it, and consider federal trademark protection before the audience makes a rebrand expensive. |
| The content | Document ownership of recordings, video, artwork, music, scripts, clips, and commissioned work. |
| The relationships | Use agreements for co-hosts, producers, editors, guests, sponsors, and anyone sharing revenue or decision-making power. |
| The audience | Build a website, email list, or membership relationship that does not disappear when a platform changes its interface or rules. |
| The expansion | Plan for merchandise, education, live events, licensing, and brand partnerships before third parties define the commercial boundaries. |

## The Dominican Opportunity Is Larger Than Advertising

The Dominican Republic has a particular advantage. Its stories travel through a diaspora that is large, bilingual, commercially significant, and accustomed to moving between markets. A show created in Santo Domingo can build listeners in New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Florida, Puerto Rico, Spain, and across Latin America without asking permission from a traditional broadcaster.

That geographic reach makes the show name more valuable. It also makes clearance and registration more important. A Dominican business name registration or ONAPI filing does not automatically create federal trademark rights in the United States. A U.S. trademark strategy should consider where the show is offered, where sponsors and customers are located, and how the brand may expand.

The same is true for creators throughout Latin America. The commercial goal should not be limited to receiving a better platform payment. It should be converting attention into assets that the creator can carry across platforms: a recognizable name, an owned catalog, a direct audience, licensed formats, products, events, and partnerships.

## The Better Question

The first question is whether Spotify can help you earn. The better question is what remains yours after the platform helps you grow.

Creators do not need to reject platforms. Platforms solve real problems. They provide distribution, discovery, analytics, payment infrastructure, hosting, and access to enormous audiences. The mistake is treating access to that infrastructure as a substitute for building an independent business underneath it.

Spotify's expansion is good news for the region. It recognizes demand that Latin American creators built long before October 20. The next step is making sure the value generated by that demand does not leave the creator as quickly as the audio leaves the microphone.

Latin America already owns the stories. The economic question is whether its creators will own the businesses built around them.

## Frequently Asked Questions

| ### When does Spotify podcast monetization begin in the Dominican Republic? Spotify says the Partner Program and Premium video revenue will become available in the Dominican Republic on October 20, 2026. Eligibility and program policies still apply. |
| --- |
| ### Can every Dominican podcaster immediately earn advertising revenue? No. The creator must satisfy Spotify's hosting, episode, consumption-hour, and audience requirements and be accepted into the program. Spotify also says ads are not currently served to listeners in the Dominican Republic through Spotify for Creators, although qualifying creators may earn from Premium video and from ads delivered when their content is consumed elsewhere. |
| ### How much advertising revenue does Spotify share? Spotify states that enrolled creators receive 50% of the revenue Spotify recognizes when an ad monetized through the Partner Program plays in an episode. Premium video revenue is calculated differently under Spotify's proprietary formula. |
| ### Should a podcaster trademark the show name before monetizing? The best time to investigate protection is before the name becomes expensive to change. A clearance search can identify conflicts, and a federal application may help protect the name across the United States for the relevant entertainment, media, or related services. |
| ### Does Spotify monetization mean Spotify owns the podcast? Participation in a monetization program and copyright ownership are different questions. Creators should review the applicable platform terms, hosting arrangement, collaborator agreements, and licenses to understand what they own and what rights they grant to the platform. |
